Well hello!!! Not really sure how to start this and not have it be awkward so I'll just jump right in... I'm Elaine, I've been sewing for a good amount of time but I've been lurking sewing blogs even longer. It's been so long that I've started to feel kind of creepy about how much I know about other bloggers but they have no idea I exist. So here I am! I've been wanting to start a blog for a long time and kept putting it off for one reason or another... I was pretty hung up on the fact that probably no one will read it but I decided... So what?! Also cycle back RE: feeling like a creep. I think it will be fun for me and decided to take the plunge. As a scientist I don't really get to write that often and probably should flex that muscle a bit more often... That's kind of a lie though, because......I reeeeally should be focusing 100% on writing up my PhD but obviously procrastinating something super important is the best motivation for side projects and so here we are. I'm justifying it with the fact that since a lot of the sewing has already been done, I just can take some quick thesis breaks to post some pics and a quick write up? ehh?
For my inaugural post I decided to go with the Saiph tunic I made a while ago, since I have gotten a TON of wear out of it and when I first made it I thought I might not like it that much.. (perhaps mirroring my feelings about blogging... Eh???)
Pattern: Saiph tunic- Papercut
Fabric: wool silk blend from Mood (purchased a loong time ago)
Listening to: Stranger things, good thing this was a quick make because I could not multi task with that in the background!
Drinking: green chai
This dress turned out to be an amazing boozy brunch dress. So roomy, surprisingly warm, just the right balance (for me) of dressy and casual. I added about an inch to the waist and about 3-4 inches to the skirt portion- I wanted it to be more of a dress/I am pretty tall and I'm happy with the length, though the skirt does kind of fly up sometimes in wintery breezes. I always wear it with tights so I kind of have to say ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ it happens. The sleeves were a pretty awkward length... I rolled them up but if I made this again I would probably make them shorter so they are actually 3/4 length. I think they are supposed to be wrist length but my arms are too long, and I like to wear sleeves rolled up anyway.
For some reason I am like deathly opposed to neckline facings, (seriously, irrational hatred) so I finished the neckline with bias binding instead. I only had black so that's what I went with, I actually don't know that I could have found a better color if I had looked, the fabric is a pretty unique dusty teal color. Maybe grey? Or go full contrast with like a fuchsia? I generally want the insides of my clothes to look nice but color matching stuff like bias binding is not necessarily a priority. This fabric also looks a bit shinier here than it really is, still trying to figure out where to get the best pictures in my relatively dim apartment!
Other than that, I finished up the insides with french seams, all in all, a pretty satisfying make! I made this maybe a year ago in the wintertime, but these pics were taken in my sweltering apartment in august. Yikes! Despite putting this outfit on in wildly inappropriate weather/all the sweat, I am thinking that this pattern would actually maybe be amazing in a cozy but stable sweatshirt knit. Furthering my goals to wear pajamas 24/7!!! I'll revisit the idea in October, when the idea of tea and sweatshirts doesn't make me want to explode.
This is such a cute dress! Binding looks great.
